We know that to begin to build a successful working relationship with a potential client, we need to get to know each other a little bit. There are some great questions we get asked from potential customers calling in to find out more about us.  They include:

How does a carpenter differ from a woodworker, and which one do I need?

Obviously, it’s all about what you need to be done. If you’re building a structure, like a home or a commercial building, or even a wooden boat, then you require a carpenter. They work on site, and are specialized in various skillsets.

Specialized areas of carpentry, just to list a few, are:

Framing carpenters will focus on framing houses. They will also create frames for concrete, among other components of a build. Their work is always on site. They really build the skeleton of the project.

Trim carpenters are also known as finish carpenters because they put the final touches and details required for completion of any project. Specializing in installing and repairing molding, installing trim around windows and doors are just a few of their jobs. Baseboards, mantels, and other ornamental pieces found in a home would also fall under their wing.

Then there are a group of skilled craftsmen we call joiners. A joiner carpenter does just that- they join wood. Unlike a framer, for example, most of the work is completed in a woodshop with all sorts of woodworking machines. These will include tools like circular saws, lathes and a wood planer. Doors, windows, staircases and furniture are projects a joiner will produce.

Cabinet makers, on the other hand, build and repair wooden items, such as kitchen cabinets. They will also build and install wooden cabinets. The majority of their time is spent in their shop, where they can also work on furniture repair project, and fixtures made of wood.

Why do I want a journeyman carpenter for my project?

A journeyman is an artisan, who is skilled in many of the disciplines required to build a structure from top to bottom. They take over 4 years of study of the various disciplines of general carpentry. And they will also take on apprentices, as well as teach pre-apprentice programs. The more one teaches the more one learns is our motto.

Some of the jobs performed include:

·       Repairing of damaged structures and unstable foundations

·       Cabinetry – building and installation

·       Framing – residential or commercial

·       Building staircase

·       Installation of doors and windows

·       Installation of Exterior cladding

·       Installation of wood flooring

After completion of journeyman status, the final stage, if one chose, would be to study even more to achieve the master level. This is the highest level achievable in the carpentry woodshop.

How much does it cost to hire a carpenter?

The answer here is not a simple one. It really comes down to the size and scope of the project and what you want. Depending on what you want done, there can be an hourly, daily or weekly rate. The more complex the project, the more it will cost. To give you a rough idea – a daily rate would fall between $300 – 500. This would adjust up or down based on the skill level of who you choose to work with.

The best way we can serve you is to know exactly what you want.

How we can achieve this is to clearly see what it is you’re wanting to accomplish, then we’ll provide a quote bases on your time and budget and scope of job.
